Last Poem (of the semester!

From a Photo (Was I hungry?)

In the distance, a pale blue pulp
Strung with wisps of marshmallow cloud,
Sways with the wind.
Two behemoths of bulging rock,
One colored as the blueberry,
The other green as the spinach leaf,
Stand proudly, heads raised high.
Before them, drowning in their tall shadows,
Lies a lake of white and gray,
Flattened like the summer sun melted
The tip of the mountain, smited it
Like an ice cream scoop, and now
It pours, drip, drip, down the reaching towers,
Down the avocado jungle,
Far below the sky.

second to last poem

Love Changes Things

My thumbnail,
With it's chipped cobalt polish,
Looks
Like a New York City skyline.

Midnight Thoughts

On nights like these
When the moon is slow,
It’s light too soft and its reach to near:
Oh,
What I’d
Give
To hear your voice again.

Words Words Words

ILY Progression*

                                        I love you, always and forever

It was easy the first time -
I didn’t say it, I swore it:
We were young and you had a guitar,
Warm arms and a way with words
That made me drool
That two-toned giggle.
But it ended, cold and
Dark as January
(Though it was during April,
The budding of spring).

                                                  iloveyou

Saying it to the next boy
Was even easier
(Fell off my tongue before
I even knew I felt it).
When I found a third love
To whisper it to, I learned
All that was easy
About the second was
Forgetting "forever."

                                               Love You

The third time was impersonal;
The “I” was dropped.

                                                   ily

By the fourth, I was jaded -
The words had lost meaning;
Now it was like saying,
I enjoy your company, or
Your hair looks nice next to mine.

                                                                *"ily" the newly popular texting shortcut of “I Love You”

Senior Art Show Poem

How Many Faces
You are a kaleidoscope some days,
The light hits and your colors blaze;
Others, you cling to blacks and blues,
Scarlets, and blood-red hues.
The king’s jester, a funeral guise,
Your face charades a thousand lies;
Which mask is true?
Which you is you?
There’s no need to hide,
I’m here; confide.

Juried Student Art Show

Don’t Let the Jurors Confine You

You display yourself in blacks and whites.
Your hair confined to the tightest bun,
No fly-aways, just sleek and still;
You flaunt your flats as your highlights,
the ordinary as your pearls,
Trying to blend in.
It’s a show: straight lines,
Bold cut, heavenly form;

I know you better than that.
I see the longing in your body:
The rough tangles, the tight-knit hair,
The compressed skin, exploding,
Flying out in a fury to be free,
Reaching every which way
To escape the governing, drab lines.
No more masks, no shields; be you:
Embrace your bewitching curves,
Revel in seductive shadow.
